Chemistry is a sub-discipline of Science that deals with the study of matter and the substances that constitute it. It also deals with the properties of these substances and the reactions undergone by them to form new substances. The Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1982. Department of Chemistry offers Under Graduate course since 1982 and Post Graduate course in Organic chemistry was introduced in 2012. Department had organized various guest lectures and workshops on NET/SET Guidance, Instrument Handling, Job Opportunities after UG and PG, Celebration of Science Day, Developing Communication Skills, Guidance on Competitive Exams, Research Guidance etc. For these activities, Department had invited renowned resource persons from Shivaji University Kolhapur, IFAS Pune, Insta Vision Laboratory Satara, Novartis Health Care Hyderabad, PQS Lab Goa, Syngene International Ltd. Banglore, Garware Wall Ropes Wai. Department also offers Certificate Courses for students like Soil and Soil Analysis, Skill Development, Household Chemicals etc. Which was conducted by Kisan Veer Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd. Bhuinj and Sapdra Foundation Aligarh, UP. Department had also organized Placement Drives in collaboration with various companies like Paranjape Autocast Pvt. Ltd. Shirwal and Indus Biotech Ltd. Lonand. Department had organized educational and study tours at IISC Bangalore, Deepak Nitrates Roha, Marathwada University Aurangabad, Malas Fruit Products Wai, Kisan Veer Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Ltd. Bhuinj, C-MET Pune, IISER Pune, NCL and Pune University. Department had also organized Seminars, Group Discussions, Poster Presentations, Welcome and Farewell Functions for students.

Scope Of Chemistry The past decades are considered as the witness for the global perspective of Chemistry in all branch sciences and even in daily life. This era is directly related to the wellbeing of human being which encompasses various modern areas of Chemical Sciences such as Chemical Synthesis, Medical Science, Physical Science, Biological Science, Environmental Science, Agriculture Science, Forensic Science and several applied courses of Chemical Sciences. All these modern areas are offshoots of the major domain of Chemical Science called as Chemistry, which directly concerns wellbeing of everywhere. Chemistry is that physical science which includes the study of a range of matters such as atoms, crystals, molecules and many other collections of matters whether they are in isolation or in combination. It also involves the concepts of energy and entropy that are related to the spontaneity of various chemical processes. Since this is a branch of natural sciences, it is commonly known as The Science of Matter. Professionals working in this field are called chemists. They study the various compositions of matters and its concerned properties like density, size, shape and acidity. Usually the chemists specialize in one or more sub disciplines depending on their interests and the choice of their specialized field. Due to highly prized nature of Chemistry and its diverse curriculum, it lays the foundation for extremely productive and exciting career in variety of disciplines as pharmaceutical, agrochemical, mineralogy, molecular biology, biotechnology, nanotechnology, polymer technology, teaching research, scientific publication and so on. The importance of Chemistry would not diminish over time, so it will remain a promising career path. In a nut shell, the study of Chemistry provides a vehicle for obtaining an education for life in a broad sense, so welcome to the great world of chemistry. Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal are awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2022 because they brought chemistry into the era of functionalism and laid the foundations of click chemistry. They share the prize with Carolyn Bertozzi, who took click chemistry to a new dimension and began using it to map cells.

Department of Chemistry started in 1982 since the inception of Kisan Veer Mahavidyalaya Wai, a constituent college of the Shivaji University Kolhapur. This Department has been working as an integral part from the very beginning of various interdisciplinary courses in the College that comes under Bachelor of Science in General and/ M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry started in 2012 , Honours in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The Department has remained engaged actively in the successful journey of following programmes: Chemistry 2023: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 was awarded to Moungi G. Bawendi, Louis E. Brus and Alexei I. Ekimov “for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots”
